Quick Overview

Planers used correctly will put your bait down where the fish live. They will also get your bait away from birds. If you pull a planer at about 4-5 knots and use spectra as a tether you should get about 1 ft of depth for 3 ft of tether. If you pull 2 planers, turn in the direction of the one with the shorter tether. Puling baits on a planer works for most big game fish, wahoo especially go for deep baits. I prefer to run the planer on its own tether rather than in line with a bridle.. Old Salty planers are recommended because they go deep and you can trip them for fast retrieval.

Planers come in several sizes depending on what type of bait you wish to troll. The # 6 Planer would be used on a small bait, the # 24 is a favorite for trolling horse ballyhoo and the # 16 is typically used with a bridle on a planer rod. You can buy the planer separately or you can purchase the Planer Kit which is ready to use.
